Surgery and sedation — without the anxiety

If you've been putting off a wisdom tooth, an extraction, or an implant because you're nervous about surgery, Dr. Miller's approach is built for you — often delivered right in the dental office you already know.

What is IV sedation?

Intravenous (IV) sedation is the administration of anti-anxiety medication through a small catheter placed in a vein in your arm or hand, delivered alongside a continuous saline solution. It provides deep comfort during your procedure while you continue to breathe on your own — a level known as moderate conscious sedation.

Many patients remember little to nothing of the procedure afterward, helping replace anxious dental memories with a calm, comfortable experience.

Safety first. Dr. Miller is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and maintains sedation credentials through the Lone Star Sedation Study Club and the American Society of Dental Anesthesia.

Patient Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will I be completely unconscious?

No. IV sedation provides moderate conscious sedation — you keep breathing on your own and can respond, but you'll feel deeply relaxed and typically remember little of the procedure. It is different from general anesthesia.

Is IV sedation safe?

Sedation is very safe when administered by a trained, credentialed provider. Dr. Miller is ACLS-certified and continuously monitors you throughout, with established emergency protocols in place, and maintains ongoing sedation education through the Lone Star Sedation Study Club and the American Society of Dental Anesthesia.

Where will my procedure take place?

Dr. Miller is an on-site surgical and sedation provider. In most cases your surgery is performed right in your regular dental office — the familiar place you already trust — because he travels to partner practices across Greater San Antonio rather than requiring a separate surgical facility.

Do I need a ride home?

Yes. Because the effects of IV sedation take time to fully wear off, you'll need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you afterward. You'll receive full pre- and post-appointment instructions in advance.

What is an on-site dentist?

An on-site dentist comes to the patient rather than requiring the patient to travel to a separate facility. Dr. Miller brings the sedation equipment, monitoring and surgical instruments directly into partner dental offices, so treatment happens in the operatory you already know.

How is an onsite dentist different from being referred out?

With a referral, you leave your dentist's office and the case goes with you. With an onsite dentist, the surgical provider comes to the practice instead. Dr. Miller performs the sedation and surgery in your own dentist's operatory, and you follow up with the dentist you already trust.

How do I get scheduled?

Ask your dentist whether Dr. Miller can provide your sedation or surgery on-site, or call or email us directly. If your office isn't yet a partner, we're happy to connect with them.
